As heavy fuel oils (HFO/IFO) generate a high caloric content and are relatively cheap, a large amount of heavy fuel oil is consumed worldwide for installations in various sectors including stationary combustion for industrial steam generation or electricity generation, heavy fuel oil is also used in shipping.

Few events have transitioned the modern petroleum industry more than IMO 2020. The time to achieve compliance for this low-Sulphur mandate has arrived, yet current solutions have left operators without viable options. Scrubbers require significant downtime and Capex, only to provide a solution that delivers little environmental progress. Switching to diesel replaces Sulfur with other emission challenges, while calibrating a ship for LNG is a cost- and time-intensive undertaking. As the industry grapples to find a true solution, the market faces an excess of HFO and a shortage of distillates that comply with IMO 2020.
